‘Y La Ceiba Dice’ is a hybrid documentary film in collaboration with Ardelle Ferrer-Negretti. The film follows activist, Ardelle and her relationship with the sacred tree, La Ceiba de Vieques.

La Ceiba, is over 400 years old and has borne witness to the many histories of the island. Her branches and roots mirror that of a woman, she is a portal between realms. Vieques was used as a bomb test site from 1941-2003 by the US Navy and the militaries presence on the island continues to this day. As a consequence of the bombing and extensive chemicals that permeated the land, sea and air, many of the local Viequenses are sick.

After a terminal diagnosis, Ardelle has fought well past her life expectancy and her journey in healing has always involved La Ceiba. Each day Ardelle visits La Ceiba, it is her belief that the sacred tree is her life source and what keeps her in this world. In return, Ardelle has worked for decades to look after and legally protect the sacred tree La Ceiba.

Alongside the creative collaboration, the active conservation project of the sacred tree La Ceiba de Vieques is also in process, led by La Ceiba Community Project.
